Prairie on Fire
Central Indiana's only official Backyard Ultra.
"Step to the line.
Embrace the grind."

The Race Details
The challenge returns! After a sold-out event last year, MTC and Hamilton County parks are proud to present Central Indiana's only official Backyard Ultra at Koteewi Park for 2025, and this year is slated to be bigger and better than ever.
If you're here reading this and don't understand the Backyard Ultra concept, here is an explanation:
Our race begins at 8 am, so at 8am, you would take off to complete a 4.167mi loop in an hour. If you complete the loop, you can line up at the starting line again at 9 am to attempt a second loop of the same distance within the same time limit. If you can complete that, you can line up again at 10 am, and so on, until only one person is left standing.
This is the PERFECT for ANY runner who wants to test their distance limits. Is your furthest distance ever run a 5k? Then, run one or two loops with us and increase your personal best. Last year, runners completed as few as one loop and as many as 30, so you have a broad range of runners.

The Course
Prairie on Fire has a day loop and a night loop. Both courses begin at the same spot, at the pavilion at the White River Campground.
The day loop begins and ends by heading across the White River via a historic fixed truss bridge and then traverses through Koteewi Park's groomed trails that consist mostly of crushed gravel.
Starting at 8pm the night course heads out-and-back on an asphalt trail that runs along 234th Street.

Parking
Prairie on Fire runner parking is currently located off-site at 11800 Koteewi Dr, Noblesville, IN 46060, When arriving the morning of the race, please give yourself at least 30 minutes to ensure you can catch a shuttle to the start area (this is provided you set up the night before). If you are setting up the morning of, you'll want at least an hour. You can drive into the park to set up your tent/canopy but will then need to move your vehicle to the off-site lot. Then ensure we have plenty of parking for spectators throughout the day.
Course Structure
Prairie on Fire is currently set up like the original Big's Backyard featuring a day and a night course. During the day you'll be in the beautiful Koteewi park, and at night you'll get to run next to some Indiana farmland on a paved out & back trail.
A hi-res running vest and headlamp are required on the night loop. Hand lamps are also permitted if you do not prefer headlamps.
Crew
Crew is strongly encouraged for a race like this, given that the optimal strategy isn't typically to leave yourself much time in between yards. 3 things of note as it relates to your crew. They may not pace you at any time, no pacers are allowed during backyard ultras. They may not meet you on the course with any aid for any reason, once you cross the start line you cannot receive aid and you cannot leave the course for any reason outside of the restroom. Lastly, given our limited space, crews must share tent's/canopies with their runners.
Food
Prairie on Fire always has some kind of food available, it's one of our highlights. Whether it be King Dough Pizza the night before, pancake breakfasts in the morning from Chaos Crewing or the legendary smoked meats from Jon Faust in the evenings, you'll never go hungry....although....we do recommend you have fuel that you've tested and that agrees with your stomach. We'll have typical ultra snacks and tailwind on top of the prior mentioned food, but that's about it.
Camping
IF you're looking to camp at White River Campground leading up to the event, just visit https://www.hamiltoncounty.in.gov/1942/White-River-Campground to look for availability.
Course Markings
Given that our trail loop doubles as a horse trail, we use white course paint to mark the turns, so if it's early and you're wondering if you're going the right way, just look down.
Course Conditions
We've been lucky over the years, but Koteewi Park can flood. While we all love a little bit of adversity, we do have an alternative day course that will be communicated closer to race day if we in fact have significant rain leading up to or during the event.
